These paintings were inspired by a road trip to Denver. As the land became flatter, the sky became bigger. I thought about Montana, “Big Sky Country”, and decided to paint the landscapes vertically to emphasize the towering skies in the West.

Many of these landscapes are of Minnesota and the Upper Midwest where I have lived most of my life. The rolling land and the ever-changing trees are in my DNA.

This series was inspired by my parents. My father was an amateur photographer and my mother was a watercolor artist. Both loved the back roads of southeastern Minnesota where old farms were often hidden from view and seemed forgotten. When my father died of Alzheimer’s at the age of 84 I came upon his slides and, using his basic composition, I added my own interpretation to his vision.

As much as I love visiting rural Minnesota, I love living in the city. This series is exploring my fascination with urban architecture and the beauty of our many parks that are here for all of us to enjoy.

Living in Minnesota, we’re very aware of the warmth and comfort of our homes during the long winter months. There’s nothing like coming back from a day of playing in the snow (or just trying to get from here to there) and seeing the golden glow of interior lights welcoming us home.

Just after 9/11 I was thinking about how those events had affected the whole country yet we in the Midwest, considered “flyover country” were often left out of the immediacy of the situation. Attention seemed to be focused on the coasts while we in the middle were in the position of observers, watching unfolding events and wondering how they might impact us personally. My roosters are dropped into situations: wary, watching, wondering. If you lived through that time you may remember our fears: flying, anthrax, Richard Reid, poisoned fields, nuclear weapons, sleeper cells, and so much more.

I’ve always loved woodblock prints, especially the starkness of the black and white variety. So one day I got a book and taught myself how to do it. I was not without some knowledge of the tools as I have a degree in cabinetmaking and enjoy working with wood. The most exciting part is inking the block and the first print you pull - is it what you expected? Better? Worse?
